Oxidation and Reduction

First things first, the easy way to remember oxidation and reduction is through the mnemonic O.I.L R.I.G,  the stands for:
  • Oxidation is loss
  • Reduction is gain
Oxidation is the removal of electrons from a substance. During respiration this through hydrogen which then becomes oxidised.

Reduction is obviously then the addition of electrons to a substance. During respiration this is when the hydrogen is added after being oxidised. All a wee bit confusing I know but all you really have to remember is O.I.L R.I.G.
